What to Expect

We understand that it is not easy visiting a church for the first time. You may have several questions “Do I belong here? Are the people friendly? How should I dress? Will my kids like it?” and/or “What is the music like?” Below are answers to what we believe are the most frequently asked questions of visitors to The Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church.

What do you teach?
Our teaching is relevant. We seek to present God’s Word in a manner that is practical and deals with real everyday life. The message will be based on the Bible and Pastor Williams will often reference movies, television, current events, or thought provoking stories to make his presentation clear and simple. If you have a Bible, bring it with you to church. If you don’t own a bible, no problem, we have bibles in every pew.

What do I wear?
Please don’t buy anything special to worship with us. Some of our members will be dressy, others will be dressed casually and comfortably. Our ultimate concern is not what you have on, but that you are our special guests Always know that you are welcome and accepted as you are.

What is the music like?
At Mt. Vernon we enjoy both both contemporary gospel music and traditional hymns. We have a praise team that lead us in worship each Sunday. Our choir sings uplifting and encouraging songs that will minister to the young and old alike.

HOW CAN I ACCEPT CHRIST?

To accept Christ is to receive the eternal relationship with Him that He so desperately wants to give every person. This relationship with Christ means that I have been forgiven of all my sins, I am a child of God, I have an eternal home in heaven, and that I am the recipient all of His blessings here on earth. Yet some don’t know if they really have a relationship with Him. Or are afraid that they might not spend eternity in heaven with God? The good news is you need not wonder. God has provided a plan whereby you can have a growing, comforting, and trusting relationship with Him. You can accept Christ by believing and then acting upon the following three things:

GOD’S PLAN OF SALVATION

Our Problem – All of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. In other words you have to fess up to your mess ups. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Sin’s Penalty – Furthermore, you have to understand that separation from God and death (spiritual and eternal) are the results of our sinful ways. But God’s gift is eternal life given by Jesus Christ our Lord. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

God’s Provision – The good news is that God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die that we might be forgiven. Christ also rose from the dead that we might experience fullness of life. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). “He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Romans 4:25).

YOUR RESPONSE OF FAITH
You can know Christ, if you believe and confess that Jesus your Lord and Savior. Believe that He is the Son of God and that God raised Him from the death. If you truly believe this, God will accept and save you (Romans 10:9-10).

If you believe God’s Word then pray this prayer:
“Dear Lord Jesus, I believe you died for my sins and was raised from the dead. Please forgive me and give me an eternal relationship with you. I surrender to your leadership in my life right now. Thank you for saving me!
